NEW state-of-the-art marine generators, which could be used in a Solway tidal power scheme, are due to undergo tests early in the new year. The Spectral Marine Energy Converter will be tried initially in waterways in Cumbria. Experts believe the technology could reduce the capital cost of a power-generating road crossing between Annan and Bowness down to between £300 and £400 million. A leading member of the project team, Nigel Catterson, gave an update at a conference at the Crichton Campus. He said later: "If the tests confirm the technology's effectiveness the timeline for construction beginning could be 2016 with power being produced by 2020." Private investers have expressed an interest in taking the project forward.
